going wild for a beautiful world
Treadlight is dedicated to promoting environmental gardens and gardening practices that seek to create a diversity of wildlife with the minimum use of scarce natural resources so that it is a net benefit to the global environment.
Modern horticulture - a resource dependent enterprise?
The gardening world is slowly coming to grips with climate change, organisations like the RHS have taken a lead in promoting environmentally sensitive gardening and many companies are making determined efforts to cut their carbon footprint. However, Treadlight believes that the mainstream conventional horticulture industry is still over-dependent on water, peat, energy, chemicals and packaging and in its
mass production and distribution of plants, largely disregard wider ecological issues, an indiscriminate use of resources coming at a cost to the wider global environment.
How many once commonplace inhabitants and habitats are sacrificed for the use of a large patio or an impeccably manicured lawn?
Treadlight upholds that this expenditure of scarce, non-renewable, natural resources reduces much of the benefit of cultivation. The way forward is to develop processes that minimise the wider ecological impact when we buy and grow our plants.
